Meet Kathryn, Owner of
Crystal Rose Florist

Welcome to
Crystal Rose

We’re here in Folsom, CA with Kathryn, owner of Crystal Rose Florist.

“I’ve been doing flowers since I was fourteen.  My dad used to grow flowers in the backyard: narcissus, roses, birds of paradise, etc-it was wonderful.  I worked for several other florists and decided I wanted to do this for myself.  I opened Crystal Rose in 2000.  The shop was cross the street for eight years before moving to our current location.”

So, what do you suggest for romance flowers?

“Romance is finding out what she likes, whether it’s mixed flowers or roses-but don’t always do red.  There are beautiful varieties of roses out there, some that have two colors on them, some are super fragrant-that is romance!  If you want to do the red roses, do them with mixed flowers in them.  The most romantic thing that I’ve come across was a guy who wanted to propose with a ring affixed inside a rose.
“My advice on giving flowers is to give them when they are least expected.  Find out what she likes and her favorite colors.  I personally like things like hydrangeas with some roses tucked in. For some of the taller arrangements I think gladiolas are a nice show.  I love orchids, and birds of paradise are really fun.  It’s nice to be able to have free range to do something creative.  It’s fun to be able to explore and use different things like birch, pods, and all kinds of interesting materials to put into an arrangement.

“Mixed arrangements are my favorite, the variety of colors and fragrances. I would do tuberose, hydrangeas, and oriental lilies.  Leave it in our hands.  Give us guidance if they have a favorite flower or color, then let the designer have it from there.  If the person is traditional or likes artistic things-that gives us a clue as to what direction to go.”

 Kathryn Gives Insider Flower Tips

 Crystal Rose Florist

What are your tips for Sympathy flowers?

“Ordering sympathy flowers can be a very emotional time.  We try to take into account the sentiment behind the flowers they choose-we do our best to make the arrangements a meaningful tribute.  It’s helpful to consider what was important to your loved one when you are ordering a funeral piece.  If they loved a certain activity, ask us to incorporate that so we can customize something and make it a memorable flower arrangement.

  Any tips on purchasing flowers?

“Always ask what’s fresh and what’s in season.  Take your flowers straight home if it’s hot out and keep the water level full.  After about 3 days cut the stems and add the packet of preservative that that you got with the flowers.  Above all enjoy the color and the fragrance as they relax and brighten your space.

  Any tips for weddings?

“I did a wedding recently where a gal wanted a garden look.  That was really fun because we went wild with greenery and garden roses.  It turned out nice; it wasn’t a traditional arrangement.  I also did another one where we put lights inside the flowers.  A lot of fun things are being done with lights in vases.
“I’m a romantic at heart.  When the bride looks down at her bouquet and she’s wearing her bridal dress, there’s just no better feeling!”
