Meet Julie, Owner of Flowers By Fairytales

Welcome to Flowers By Fairytales

We’re here in Elk Grove, speaking with Julie, owner of Flowers by Fairytales.  How did you get started in the floral business?

“Well, I started out working for a shop down the street.  I fell in love with the business.  It’s the flowers I love.  They fill all your senses: the scent, the color.  There’s so much you can do with them.  It’s wonderful to receive flowers, and I thought to myself,  I might as well be doing something I love.

“I’ve been a resident of Elk Grove for over 30 years.  I retired about 10 years ago from the corporate world, and started doing volunteer work in the city.  I helped found one of the art galleries down the street. I wanted to do something artistic so I opened up a flower shop. It’s been five and half years and we’re doing really well.
“We do a lot of whimsical things; that’s why we named the shop Flowers by Fairytales. We use a lot of curly willow, butterflies, and glitter. We create unique things to make people feel special. Customer service is our top priority. Our shop is full of beautiful gifts. We have inspirational gifts like the Kelly Rae Roberts art. We sell a lot of stained glass lamps, sun catchers, music boxes, tons of Harry London chocolates, teddy bears, stuffed dogs and cats, wind chimes, garden things, and all of it in a whimsical theme.
“We have a lot of jewelry; I’ve been collecting vintage jewelry for over 40 years.  Jewelry can be a very romantic gift, and pairs wonderfully with a flower arrangement.
“We’re across the street from the Elk Grove funeral chapel, and do a lot of custom funeral pieces. We are very good at personalizing our arrangements.  If a cowboy passes on and they want a wagon wheel, we can do it.

“I love my customers, I love talking to them on the phone and hearing their stories.  I’ve gotten calls from guys on the field phone in Afghanistan and they want to send a dozen roses to their gal. This one soldier said, ‘can you do me a favor and remove the rose in the middle and put a silk rose there and on the card tell her I’ll love her until the last rose dies?’ And that kind of stuff just really gives my heart hope that romance is still alive.  Most of the time the guys will come in to buy things for their wife, mom or grandmother-it’s just so sweet.  It’s a happy place to be.”

The Magic of Flowers And Plants

Flowers always say, "You're Special!"

There is nothing like the thrill of receiving flowers. You feel special: someone is thinking about you, wanting to lift your spirits and make your day!  Flowers touch all our senses, from visual vibrant colors to sweet fragrances.  These powerful elements evoke pleasant memories of past times.  Flowers are timeless, and bring those sweet memories to the present.
Who isn’t thrilled by the brilliance of color, the richness of life in the garden!  We give plants and flowers  because we love the beauty of the outdoors.  Giving plants and flowers as gifts brings the garden indoors for us to enjoy.

     More to consider:
Flowers can be a gift for anyone.
From son to father, daughter to mom, friend to friend... tell someone they are special with flowers.
    Give flowers at unexpected times.
Giving flowers is a spontaneous act of kindness that will brighten any person’s day.
Consider flowers as a thank you!  Acknowledge all that someone has done for you by giving them flowers.
The bottom line: let someone know that you are thinking about them. Flowers always say, “I’m here for you!”

There is a whole world of flowers out there...

get to know them!

Flowers come in a marvelous variety of shapes, sizes, and colors.  Try something new and interesting the next time you order.

By learning the flower choices, you can personalize your arrangements to suit your taste or that of your recipient.  For example, if your mom loves hydrangeas, you will know what to ask for.

Ordering from a florist is going to be much easier when you can tell them specifically what flowers you like. The guide that follows represents some of the more common flower choices available in flower shops.

Ask your florist for their expert opinion in picking your flowers.  Working closely with your florist will get you the best results!

"Flowers always make people better, happier, and more helpful; they are sunshine, food, and medicine for the soul."

Julie Gives An Insider's Look
Flowers By Fairytales

“During Valentines it’s crazy busy and you’re working until 3 or 4 in the morning wondering why the heck you’re doing this. A lot of guys will go on the internet and they look up what they want to say on the card, and I’ll have 10 guys come in all with the same message for their card.  My advice to guys is come up with your own original heart-felt message before you order the flowers-that adds double meaning to the flower delivery.
“We always try to add the extra touch.  We have a lot of fairies, it goes with our name. People will call asking if we have mermaids too-yes, we have mermaids.  We also have gnomes.  If guys say their girls are allergic to flowers we have ginormous teddy bears.  We also have full line of plush dogs and cats.  We have all kinds of balloons and balloons of Disney characters. We try to carry a little bit of everything.
“We had a bride who used to be Snow White at Disneyland; she got married at the Scotts on the River.  We did all blue, silver and white flowers with glitter.  We got the blue dyed roses and the blue orchids and it was really spectacular.  It turned out great!  We do a lot of fun weddings, too.  We did an older ladies wedding with a lot of peacock and ostrich feathers that was really different.
“We have people that will call from out of state and tell us they had a friend who passed away and they want to give more than just flowers.  We have stepping stones that say, ‘beloved, always in our heart.’  We also have angel garden stakes and wind chimes that will blow in the wind in the garden to remind you that your friend is not forgotten.

“I’ve been to Hawaii five times so I love tropicals.  They last long and they are popular during the summer.  We do bird of paradise, orchids, proteas, etc.  During prom time a lot of the high school kids want corsages that are different. They come in with a $500 ball gown, so they want to have something more than just roses in their corsage.  We do the rhinestone sprays, ranunculus, freesia, and all different types of corsages-even peonies.
“When I was growing up in Toledo, Ohio, we had peonies in our backyard.  I used to pick them and bring them to my teachers so I could get a better grade.  I thought they were just beautiful.  I love flowers all seasons of the year.”
