La Belle Fleur

Welcome to
La Belle Fleur

We’re here in Santa Rosa, CA with Diane (on left), owner of La Belle Fleur

“I started out in a little kiosk right outside this shop thirty-two years ago.  After six years in the kiosk, I had the opportunity to move into a storefront.  And here I am in my beautiful store front—my little tiny shop that I love so much!  It’s loaded with great flowers in a tiny space.

“Five years ago Robin joined me, and she’s one of the best designers in northern California.  We both love flowers, and we both love what we do.  I’ve done flowers for generations of people-when they’ve met, when they go to their high school prom, when they get married, have their babies, etc.  It’s full circle.  When their parents pass I do their flowers. It’s a beautiful business and I love it.

“I always go to the San Francisco Flower Market: the biggest wholesale flower market in Northern California.  I go there in the middle of the night to get my flowers for the shop.  I focus on the highest quality flowers I can get.

“When you walk in through the door of my shop what you see are flowers—and that’s what a flower shop should be.  As a young person I travelled pretty extensively.  In Europe the flower shops, particularly in France, have black and white tiled floors and you see the flowers.  In the U.S. you don’t see flowers as much, so we designed a center kiosk that shows all our flowers, then at night we put them away.  During the day they’re right out here for people to see.  It pulls people in.  People love to come in and browse the flowers, everybody—old, young, full range of people love to come in and see the shop, what we’ve got, and smell the flowers.

“I love everything about flowers; there’s nothing I don’t like.  I love the way they look and the way they smell.  I love the transitory nature of flowers, that it’s a gift that’s not permanent.  It’s here now and beautiful and then it goes away.  Just like life, it just passes on.  I think it’s the most romantic gift that a person can give to another person.  Everyday I’m surrounded by this.  It’s a true gift.”

The Magic of Flowers and Plants
Flowers always say, "You're special!"

There is nothing like the thrill of receiving flowers. You feel special: someone is thinking about you, wanting to lift your spirits and make your day!
Flowers touch all our senses, from visual vibrant colors to sweet fragrances.  These powerful elements evoke pleasant memories of past times.  Flowers are timeless, and bring those sweet memories to the present.
Who isn’t thrilled by the brilliance of color, the richness of life in the garden!  We give plants and flowers  because we love the beauty of the outdoors.  Giving plants and flowers as gifts brings the garden indoors for us to enjoy.

     More to consider:
Flowers can be a gift for anyone.
From son to father, daughter to mom, friend to friend... tell someone they are special with flowers.
    Give flowers at unexpected times.
Giving flowers is a spontaneous act of kindness that will brighten any person’s day.
Consider flowers as a thank you!  Acknowledge all that someone has done for you by giving them flowers.
The bottom line: let someone know that you are thinking about them. Flowers always say, “I’m here for you!”

There is a whole world of flowers out there...
get to know them!

Flowers come in a marvelous variety of shapes, sizes, and colors.  Try something new and interesting the next time you order.   By learning the flower choices, you can personalize your arrangements to suit your taste or that of your recipient.  For example, if your mom loves hydrangeas, you will know what to ask for.

Ordering from a florist is going to be much easier when you can tell them specifically what flowers you like. The guide that follows represents some of the more common flower choices available in flower shops.  Ask your florist for their expert opinion in picking your flowers.  Working closely with your florist will get you the best results!

Diane & Robin Give an Insider’s Perspective
         La Belle Fleur Design

[On Giving Flowers]

[Diane] “Think about the person you’re giving them to!  Consider their favorite colors, or if they have any favorite flowers and think about what you want the flowers to say.  Again, I always think quality is really nice rather than buying a pre-made that might not last as long.  In this shop we’ll do one flower or a million flowers-anything you want, any budget you want.”

[Robin]  “I had one customer that started out with a dozen roses and every week he would multiply it until he got up to twelve dozen roses, and by that time we couldn’t find a container big enough to fit them in.  They eventually got married and we did their wedding flowers.”

[On Sympathy]

[Diane] “Robin is the most expert on sympathy flowers of anyone I’ve ever met.  In the first place, we never take older flowers from the refrigerator to put into a sympathy arrangement.  We mark it specifically for the family with what they’ve asked for.  We always try to personalize.  Robin has done stuff where the guy was a fisherman, so it had fishing tackle in it.  She also made a cowboy piece that had a standing spray with a lasso and horseshoe.”

[Robin] “The best one ever was the Ferris wheel for a circus performer.  We did a Ferris wheel with one cart off—so there was one missing chair.

“There’s nothing sadder than a funeral with no flowers.  If they see flowers it lightens the mood, especially if there’s something personal included.  For example, if it’s a casket piece for a gardener and we can include the gardeners boots in the middle of it, and grasses and such coming out—it’s so much more touching for the family.”

[Diane] “Flowers are part of our culture. They provide comfort and are an expression of love.  I’m an unfaithful lover of flowers—I go from flower to flower.  I love tulips in the spring; I also love Gloriosa lilies, and then dahlias in the summer.  Every week that I come in there will be a different flower here that I’ve bought at the flower market that is my favorite flower of the week. This week it’s the lavender bouvardia because it’s so unusual, and the second would be this white tweedia.”
