Welcome to Placerville Flowers on Main

We’re here in Placerville, CA talking with Mel (pictured above on right), owner of Placerville Flowers on Main:

“Placerville Flowers on Main has been in service since January 1, 2007.  I was hired by the previous owner, Judy, a month before we opened and I worked for her for seven years before purchasing the shop in 2014.  I went to Sac State and got two degrees, a bachelors in English and Religious Studies and decided it was either I keep going to school and put myself into debt, or go this way.  I’m really happy with my choice.

“I love it because I’m surrounded by beautiful flowers all day and I go home smelling like flowers.  It’s just a really wonderful, organic, natural experience.  I get to work with all of my best friends; I have a great crew of girls that are amazing. We get to laugh and bring beauty to people every day.
“We have a very big shop, its over 2000 square feet, which is really big for a flower shop.  We have a lot of wall space and it was the previous owners concept to support the local artists.  So the front of the shop is filled with all El Dorado County local artists in whatever medium, whether its oils, pastels, paintings, photographs, woodwork, jewelry, or dry wreaths.

“We also love antiques-that’s our passion. We’ll all go out and find stuff, and some people bring stuff up on consignment if it works in the shop.
“Not everybody thinks of floral design as art, but of course I do; it’s another way of expressing an artistic design.  Floral trends tend to follow interior design trends, whether its through colors, styles or technique.  The shabby chic garden theme has been so huge lately, so that will influence what containers we use.
“Our favorite design has always been the natural, lush, organic garden look over the contemporary or modern look.  It’s really close to European style and English country garden. And the seasonal flowers work into that really well.  We’re not using everything that’s hot house grown like orchids, roses, etc.  We get to use the fun stuff like zinnia or amaranth.”

Flower Design Classes

“In the fall and winter we do design classes.  We probably do between 8-10 classes, and we max out every time at 30-35 people per class.  We’ll do fall wreaths, Christmas wreaths, Thanksgiving centerpieces, flower head wreaths.  In January we do a wedding workshop, an all-day flower class where we teach how to make flower bouquets, centerpieces, boutonnieres and corsages.  With the Pinterest boom there are so many people that Do-it-Yourself—this is our way to tap into that.”

The Magic of Flowers and Plants
Flowers always say, "You're special!"

There is nothing like the thrill of receiving flowers. You feel special: someone is thinking about you, wanting to lift your spirits and make your day!
Flowers touch all our senses, from visual vibrant colors to sweet fragrances.  These powerful elements evoke pleasant memories of past times.  Flowers are timeless, and bring those sweet memories to the present.
Who isn’t thrilled by the brilliance of color, the richness of life in the garden!  We give plants and flowers  because we love the beauty of the outdoors.  Giving plants and flowers as gifts brings the garden indoors for us to enjoy.

     More to consider:
Flowers can be a gift for anyone.
From son to father, daughter to mom, friend to friend... tell someone they are special with flowers.
    Give flowers at unexpected times.
Giving flowers is a spontaneous act of kindness that will brighten any person’s day.
Consider flowers as a thank you!  Acknowledge all that someone has done for you by giving them flowers.
The bottom line: let someone know that you are thinking about them. Flowers always say, “I’m here for you!”

There is a whole world of flowers out there...
get to know them!

Flowers come in a marvelous variety of shapes, sizes, and colors.  Try something new and interesting the next time you order.   By learning the flower choices, you can personalize your arrangements to suit your taste or that of your recipient.  For example, if your mom loves hydrangeas, you will know what to ask for.

Ordering from a florist is going to be much easier when you can tell them specifically what flowers you like. The guide that follows represents some of the more common flower choices available in flower shops.  Ask your florist for their expert opinion in picking your flowers.  Working closely with your florist will get you the best results!

Mel's Insider Tips on Flowers

“My Insider tip?  Buy seasonal flowers. That’s our big thing, especially with weddings and with our general customer base.  If we stay knowledgeable about what grows locally or in California in general, you are always going to get more for your dollar.
“We always try to educate our brides about what’s in season, and with the farm-to-fork movement people are much more open to that.  This concept is being translated into the flower world as ‘field-to-vase’.  We buy from 12 different local growers during the summertime.  We are literally getting flowers cut fresh from the field, and we’re putting them into the vases we send out every day.  I think that’s the best tip: be aware of what’s local.

“When it comes to flowers for romance, just be a good communicator; tell us what the intention is.  We have a running joke around here that ‘the story matters.’  The story matters when we take an order from a customer.  We want to know what it’s for.  Is there anything special you want to add to it?  Is it an anniversary or a first date?  For example, if we have a guy going on a first date asking for red roses, we say, ‘hey, buddy slow down, let’s do something more like a mixed bouquet.  Red roses on a first date can scare a girl away; they can be serious.

“Another tip for guys and gals is to have faith in your florist.  We are professionals and we do this every day, so you can leave the arrangement up to us-you’re always going to get a better bouquet.
“The best time to give flowers is every day, especially during the unexpected times.   I think it is more thoughtful and everlasting when it’s a surprise.
“People should bring flowers into their home every day because beauty makes you happy.  You can’t look at a flower and be sad.  You should have flowers in your home all the time.”
